The question is simple. Why is it that the things we actually end up learning are almost always the things somebody patient sat next to us and explained until they clicked? And why does that almost never happen?

I grew up in Denmark. I was the kid who got curious about everything and bored of most things by chapter two. The subjects that stuck were the ones where one specific person, a teacher or my dad or a friend who knew the thing, noticed where I was stuck and explained it a different way.

It wasn’t that the other teachers couldn’t teach me. I just understood things better when it connected to something I cared about, and when I could take it at my own pace. I wanted school to feel like that all the time. It almost never did.

That’s the thing I’m trying to build. Something that sits next to you while you figure things out. Something that doesn’t mind explaining it a different way when it doesn’t click. Something that moves at your pace, and connects it to what you actually care about.

I’m not there yet. Sometimes it misreads where you’re stuck and takes too long to notice. Sometimes the example it picks doesn’t land. New languages calibrate in waves, and every new subject gets sharper after the first few people run through it. But I’m shipping something every week, and I read every email that comes in, because at this size that’s still the fastest way to make it better.
